In the Armenian capital of Yerevan, we stay overnight and visit the medieval Gerhard Monastery cut into rock, and the pagan temple of Garni, before visiting the Cascade giant stairway and the Casfejian Museum of Modern Art. Boarding The Golden Eagle we take the scenic route around stunning Lake Sevan, before visiting the Haghpat Monastery, and sipping Armenian Cognac while admiring glorious views of the Caucasus Mountains.

In Georgia, we walk through old Tbilisi with its atmospheric winding streets. We visit the 13th century Metekhi church, the 5th century Sioni Cathedral and Trinity Cathedral, one of the world's largest Orthodox churches. In the beautiful Kakheti region, at the heart of the Georgian wine industry, we tour the Tsinandali estate. At Gori, we find the birthplace and museum dedicated to Joseph Stalin, before proceeding to Uplistsikhe for a private performance of traditional Georgian polyphonic singing, and a tour of the amazing cave city of Uplistsikhe from the 6th century BC. Travelling via Mtskheta, Georgia's old capital we enter Azerbaijan, and head for Baku with its picturesque old town on the western shore of the Caspian Sea.

Across the Caspian Sea
Our empty train is loaded onto a ferry for the Caspian Sea crossing to Turkmenistan, as we fly to Ashgabat, a modern desert capital with extravagant fountains, golden domes and towering modern buildings. Rejoining our train, we stop to see Darvaza's famous gas crater which has been burning for over 40 years. In Uzbekistan, we find Khiva, an impressive 2,500 year old walled city on the Silk Road rises out of the desert and offers ancient mosques and bazaars. Bukhara is equally as impressive and in Samarkand, we visit the awe-inspiring Registan Square, Bibi Khanum Mosque and the Ulug Beg Observatory. We tour Tashkent in Uzbekistan, where we walk through the Old Town to view one of Islam's most sacred relics - the world's oldest Koran. Our train passes through the scenic Tien Shan Mountains to Almaty in Kazakhstan where we visit Zenkov Cathedral, a 19th century Orthodox church made entirely of wood.
