Liz Anderson
Managing Director
After teaching in Japan more than ten years ago I decided to travel across Asia, overland to the UK to visit the places that I had studied during my degree which focused on Russian history. My research led me to Sundowners Overland and I spent many hours planning my route back in detail. I had little idea then that my desire to explore regions I had long read and dreamt about would change the course of my life. After that trip my fascination for the region grew and, giving up the world of consultancy, I returned to Sundowners Overland to travel our routes extensively - accompanying our journeys as a Tour Leader, for hands on liaison with current partners and to research and source new routes and local partners. This remains key to my role today and I consider it essential in ensuring that we are delivering the best possible experiences to our clients.
Today I enjoy that our destinations are constantly evolving and changing; there is always another border to open or a region to explore and sharing those experiences with our team and clients remains an important part of what I do today. Listening to the stories that have inspired our clients to travel and, on their return, the anecdotes from the road are what make each and every one of group journeys and independent adventures special and unique. These stories also continue to convince me that through travel to our destinations, and by taking the time to interact and engage with both the people and the environment of our destinations presents an opportunity to experience something new and have a whole lot of fun on the way in some still relatively unknown and unexplored regions.
Sundowners Overland is also constantly evolving as we have created new products to meet the ever changing needs of our clients, be it through our Vodkatrain programme aimed at 18-35 year olds, breaking new ground in the creation of our Premium journeys or through our Experience Tours which provide just the right combination of alternative sightseeing and independent travel on the trains. I feel that we have an option that should cater for everyone be they young or old, with only a couple of weeks to spare or for those who are planning more protracted globetrotting. I am constantly amazed by what draws people to our regions, be it special interest groups, honeymooners or travel enthusiasts; being able to adapt our itineraries to meet all our clients’ needs is what I believe our team do best.

The satisfaction of knowing that you have literally covered every step of the way on land and spotting somewhere to read up on later (or to go back and visit on another occasion).
Which of the Sundowners Overland destinations fascinates you most?
Uzbekistan for its incredible architecture, cities and warm welcome. Russia for such a fascinating and long history.
Give us your best tip for travelling on Sundowners Overland journeys.
Earplugs for the train; even the most hospitable compartment companions might snore. Try to learn a few phrases although my sign language skills have been known to be quite creative, taste a little bit of everything.
What is your most memorable travel experience?
Spending time on a project for tigers in India and seeing the animals in their natural habitat was very special (and worth the time I spent dressed up as a tiger fundraising to get there!) seeing the Terracotta Warriors for the first time which remain one of my highlights of all of our destinations and I have many happy memories of exploring the small towns of Japan and eating some incredibly fresh sushi.
Which Sundowners Overland journeys are on your wish list?
A tailor made itinerary through the Caucasus (just in case I don’t get 45 days off work to do a full Grand Asian Caravan!), the Silk Road Caravan to wind down through Iran and end up with an easy flight home out of Dubai and the Christmas Trans Mongolian to enjoy watching the winter wonderland drift by from the cosiness of the train, and to be able to enjoy some of my favourite museums without the crowds.
What is your favourite season to travel?
Spring or Autumn, but I am still determined to see Lake Baikal frozen. I always seem to arrive just as the ice is melting…

Working with operators in many different countries and currencies is very different from other companies she has experienced and she relishes the challenge. Having such a multicultural office environment also adds to this experience.

Virginia Devlin
Virginia joined the team at Sundowners Overland in 2000 when she returned home to Melbourne after 18 months of travelling and working through Europe and UK. She began working as a Travel Advisor and during this time had an opportunity to travel on a number of our journeys. She fell in love with Central Asia and Mongolia. She particularly admired the scenery, architecture, markets and the people. Virginia believes that the planning of a trip is when the journey really begins and she enjoyed being able to experience the excitement of this with so many of our clients. Virginia now has 2 beautiful children who keep her pretty busy at home but she still enjoys coming into the office part time to immerse herself in the world of overland travel.

I believe that it’s the best way to experience and explore different countries! Travelling by train or by bus give us the opportunity to see how landscapes change, see different architectures, different cultures and explore less known regions.
Which of the Sundowners Overland destinations fascinates you most?
I’m fascinated by the different countries of Central Asia and Iran, mainly because they have such rich and fascinating history, and hold some of the most ancient and diverse cultures and traditions in the world.
Give us your best tip for travelling on Sundowners Overland journeys.
The best advice I can give when travelling with Sundowners Overland is to try to communicate as much as possible with the different people you’ll meet in the different countries, because that will be the best part of your adventure.
What is your most memorable travel experience?
My most memorable travel experience so far was travelling solo through India and south East Asia. India as many know is a country that challenges and also enchants you. I had a great adventure there and also had the time to learn about myself. Also I have to say that I loved the cuisine, even not eating meat for a couple of months.
In South East Asia, I’ve meet wonderful people, visited amazing places and had one of the most beautiful boat trips of my life for my 30th birthday on the grand Mekong River.
Which Sundowners Overland journeys are on your wish list?
The Sundowners Overland journey in my wish list is definitely the Grand Asian Caravan!
What is your favourite season to travel?
I have to say that I don’t have a favourite season to travel, but I always prefer to go to the warmer spots of the globe.

Joanna Eveleigh-Whitford
Product Coordinator
Joanna’s longing for travel to faraway destinations started from an early age when her father brought exotic gifts from his trips abroad. When the school years were over Joanna set off for a year of independent travel and returned home with the resolve to leave again as soon as funds allowed. The next trip soon followed and this time Joanna’s thirst for adventure took her around the Indian Sub-continent and South East Asia where she cooked her way around these countries and spent much time visiting food markets and local sellers. Since returning to Australia it has been Sundowners Overland’s tours that have captured Joanna’s passion for travel and discovery and she joined the Operations team to create adventurous and cultural travel itineraries for like-minded travellers. Joanna finds that the most fascinating aspect of her position with Sundowners Overland is the communication responsibilities she has with our diverse group of local partners as well as the creative aspect of planning unique itineraries that link up various train routes for our clients to make their trips unforgettable for all the right reasons.

What do you love most about overland travel?
The opportunity to understand about the diverse cultures we visit through conversations with local people within their community. A traveller can have identical experiences of what life is like in a rural village or how time is spent travelling on one of the world’s most famous train ride, rather than read this in a travel book when flying over.
What is your most memorable travel experience?
Travelling numerous trains north to south in India, looking at enchanting scenery as the train travels by and having the most fascinating conversations with locals of all diversities.

Starting in India and travelling west along the Silk Road allows you to follow in the footsteps of the mighty, 14th Century, Tamerlane, a direct descent from Genghis Khan. The last of the grand nomadic leaders, he built a powerful empire and led armies across Eurasia from Delhi to Moscow.

What do you love most about overland travel?
It gives you a better understanding of the people, food and landscape of the country. It gives you more opportunities to interact with the locals rather than being shuffled from city to city or airport to airport. There is a great social aspect to travelling overland which no other form of travel can offer.
Which of the Sundowners Overland destinations fascinates you most?
I can’t narrow it down to 1 particular destination so I’ll have to say Central Asia as a whole. Many things attract me to Central Asia but the main points are that it offers a new experience in a completely different culture, so weather it be trying to cross a border or cross the road, at times you will need to have patience and simply enjoy the experience.
Give us your best tip for travelling on Sundowners Overland journeys.
Most of our itinerary's will either start or finish in Beijing so a must is to get a bite to eat at the evening food market down Wanfujing Street and try some of the random delicacies.
What is your most memorable travel experience?
Its hard to say which travel experience is my favourite, but one that stands out would be visiting Cambodia for the first time. Travelling from Phnom Penh to Siem by bus and visiting some rural villages & monastery's while trying some local delicacy's like tarantulas. I bought myself a pet tarantula for a couple of dollars, and as you can imagine it didn’t go down to well with the people who suffer from arachnophobia on the bus.
Which Sundowners Overland journeys are on your wish list?
Given a choice I'd have to go with the 45 Grand Asian Caravan
What is your favourite season to travel?
Well I'm not great with cold weather, so given the choice I'll always opt for the summer months. Depending on my travel destination then I like to try and structure my trip around a major event or any local festivals. Aiming for special events like the Naadaam festival in Mongolia is a great way to experience some of the local traditions, culture and best of all join in the celebration.

What do you love most about overland travel?
There are so many things I love about overland travel! The comfort of travelling by train in a 4 berth compartment instead of a small plane or coach seat, the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that gives you the chance to befriend the locals or other tourists travelling on the same route or the romantic evenings spent watching beautiful sunsets out of the train windows. Time has a different dimension when you travel overland, you forget about days of the week, dates of the month and you simply enjoy the experience!
Which of the Sundowners Overland destinations fascinates you most?
All of them in their own way!!! After my trip to China, Mongolia and Russia, I can honestly say I’d like to go back to all of them and explore more! I’d love to experience the Silk Road journey too, but equally India has a charm that makes me interested in spending a few weeks there! So many places, not enough time!
Give us your best tip for travelling on Sundowners Overland journeys.
Be tolerant, be open minded, don’t judge, don’t stand out. Think of it as a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience places and countries that are still not part of “mass tourism”. Enjoy the beauty of sleeping in a Mongolian ger, taste as many local foods as possible, experience as many little adventures as you can – whether it’s climbing the Great Wall in China or swimming in Lake Baikal in Russia, you will always remember them! Also befriend as many locals or fellow travellers as you can, some friendships can last a lifetime!
What is your most memorable travel experience?
I have to say all my travels have been memorable in their own way, but based on my recent Trans Mongolian trip, I’d have to say climbing the Great Wall of China gave me an amazing feeling! Visiting and staying at a ger camp in Mongolia was the best experience in terms of unique highlight of my trip, while the hospitality and food at Tatiana’s guesthouse in Listvyanka were better than any hotels’ I’ve ever stayed in.
Which Sundowners Overland journeys are on your wish list?
Silk Road and India as I have never been, but also Naadam festival – whether it’s the short 10 day version or the full 24 days one, I guess that will all depend on holiday days!
What is your favourite season to travel?
Definitely summer, everything is better when the sun is shining!
