Travel Advisor Asia Overland
Peter has always held a strong interest for travel but It wasn’t until he ate his way through Europe & Asia that he decided to join the travel industry so he could share his experiences with other like minded travellers. Food has always been a big focus for Peter while he travels, so he couldn’t be happier when he can mix a new dish with a new destination. While Peter is studying International Development he is also part of the Customer Operations Team at Sundowners while creating itineraries through our unique destinations.
What do you love most about overland travel?
It gives you a better understanding of the people, food and landscape of the country. It gives you more opportunities to interact with the locals rather than being shuffled from city to city or airport to airport. There is a great social aspect to travelling overland which no other form of travel can offer.
Which of the Sundowners Overland destinations fascinates you most?
I can’t narrow it down to 1 particular destination so I’ll have to say Central Asia as a whole. Many things attract me to Central Asia but the main points are that it offers a new experience in a completely different culture, so weather it be trying to cross a border or cross the road, at times you will need to have patience and simply enjoy the experience.
Give us your best tip for travelling on Sundowners Overland journeys.
Most of our itinerary's will either start or finish in Beijing so a must is to get a bite to eat at the evening food market down Wanfujing Street and try some of the random delicacies.
What is your most memorable travel experience?
Its hard to say which travel experience is my favourite, but one that stands out would be visiting Cambodia for the first time. Travelling from Phnom Penh to Siem by bus and visiting some rural villages & monastery's while trying some local delicacy's like tarantulas. I bought myself a pet tarantula for a couple of dollars, and as you can imagine it didn’t go down to well with the people who suffer from arachnophobia on the bus.
Which Sundowners Overland journeys are on your wish list?
Given a choice I'd have to go with the 45 Grand Asian Caravan
What is your favourite season to travel?
Well I'm not great with cold weather, so given the choice I'll always opt for the summer months. Depending on my travel destination then I like to try and structure my trip around a major event or any local festivals. Aiming for special events like the Naadaam festival in Mongolia is a great way to experience some of the local traditions, culture and best of all join in the celebration.
