Trans Siberian and Mongolian Railways
The Trans Siberian Railway is arguably the world's most famous railway journey and certainly one of the great overland journeys of all time. Originally planned by Tsar Alexander III, it was his son Tsar Nicholas II that actually laid the first foundation stone in 1890 for what was to be the world's longest railway at 9288km (5771 miles), running from Moscow all the way to Vladivostok, situated on the Sea of Japan. Crossing 16 major rivers and linking Europe to Asia this route has intrigued and attracted travellers since is original completion in 1916. To travel its route is to experience splendour of the landscapes, culture and peoples that inhabit this fascinating region.

The Silk Road, while not one well-established road, but a network of land and sea routes between China, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Europe, has been a vital trade route for more than 2000 years.
